Schwarzenegger Honours Dr. Martin Luther King!
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger attended the 21st annual Martin Luther King breakfast, in San Francisco yesterday. He was the main speaker at the ceremony that honors the legacy of Dr. King. The Governor received a mixed welcome. Some people obviously still angry over the clemency denials, jeered slightly, with some tame boos.
But Arnold got on with it, speaking of Dr. King and how his father in law, Seargent Shriver, who founded the Peace Corps, had worked with him.
"He worked with Dr. Martin Luther King. As a matter of fact, he had a great relationship with him," said Schwarzenegger. "He told me many times the kind of work that he did with him, and how Dr. Martin Luther King was for public service and promoting the idea that everyone of us can serve people."
"In every generation, there are a singular few with the courage, the strength and the willingness to give up everything in pursuit of their dream. Martin Luther King was one of those singular people and his dream of justice, harmony and equality moved an entire nation."
"One can only imagine how our nation and our world would be different today had he not been taken from us. But on Monday, we will remember him with deep gratitude for his sacrifice, his wisdom, and his perseverance in bringing this nation into the light."
The Governor was introduced by former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, the renowned Democratic leader who held power in Sacramento as Assembly speaker for more than a quarter of a century and who, at the breakfast, effusively called Schwarzenegger "a friend of mine.''
When Schwarzenegger took the microphone, the audience grew quiet, listening politely to his speech. They laughed at his Terminator jokes, and then as he teased Brown, a sharp dresser, for his sartorial splendor and for trying to get bit parts in Hollywood films.
